“The righteous who walks in his integrity — blessed are his children after him!”
— Proverbs 20:7
In the time that this was written by king Solomon, integrity was a big deal. It still is. But for the Hebrews, integrity was about living a life that was undivided, consistent, and wholehearted before God and man. To walk in integrity meant your heart wasn’t divided between God and idols. To be a man of integrity meant your public and private life was consistent, that you were honest in all that you did and whoever you had dealings with. You were reliable and faithful, and could be trusted. And most of all, a man of integrity was faithful to God and His word.
The opposite — a man without integrity — is a man who was doubled minded, a man who manipulated, who put on a show for others and lived a life of hypocrisy. That was true then, and it’s true today. And the world is full of men who lack integrity.
Biblical integrity is part of your character. Your character is what you hand down to your children. It’s your spiritual legacy — the example you set. That’s why Solomon says that the man who lives with integrity will bless his children, because they will inherit his spiritual legacy, and because of the example you set, they too can be men and women of integrity — whole hearted, consistent, reliable, faithful, and God honoring. Choose to walk in integrity, because you will pass on what you choose to walk in.
