Brothers… What we do in life, echoes in eternity
In the movie Gladiator, one of the more famous quotes comes at the beginning of the film. Rome is at war with the Germanic barbarians and Maximus is preparing his men for battle. He gives them a charge, and says “Brothers… What we do in life, echoes in eternity”. He was telling his men, live or die, you will be remembered for the courage, or lack thereof, you display on the battlefield. The courage to fight for your king, and your brothers who stand shoulder to shoulder with you.
This is a powerful quote; one that we ought to consider for our own lives. Because there are only two things that go on into eternity: the souls of men and women (Matthew 25:46), and the Word of God (Isaiah 40:8)
If that’s the case, do you have the courage to fight for the souls of those God has entrusted you with? Do you have the courage to stand for your King? Will you fight? If everything else on this earth withers away (according to Isaiah 40:8) and all we’re left with are the souls of men and the word of God, are you prioritizing your life accordingly? When we pursue the things of God, we lead a life and leave a legacy of significance, and that is what echoes in eternity.
