Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. Ephesians 6:11
In the army, soldiers wear body armor. This armor protects their vital organs, their heart, and can be the difference between life and death. This armor provides a level of comfort and confidence for the soldier, so he can advance through enemy territory knowing that he is protected. If he is hit by fire, there is a high likelihood of survival because of this protection.
During the Iraq War, British soldiers were issued body armor, and this body armor was called — Paraclete.
In scripture, Jesus told us he was going to send us a helper, a comforter, an advocate, one that would empower us. Jesus, of course, was referring to the Holy Spirit. In the Greek, the Holy Spirit is called parákletos, or, Paraclete.
When we are born again, our spirit is made new and we receive the Holy Spirit. The Paraclete. We go from being uncovered and exposed to the enemy, to covered and protected, just like the solider.
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Ephesians 6:12-13
We are in a never ending spiritual battle. The war is over the hearts of men and women. The enemy wants to steal, kill and destroy. Scripture tells us to put on the full armor of God, so that we are protected and equipped for battle. The comfort and encouragement that comes with the Paraclete will help sustain and protect you in battle. A solider would never enter the battle without his Paraclete, and we shouldn’t either.
